Data Center Automation

Do you have a handful of engineers that manage hundreds of Linux servers? Are new projects on-hold because there is not enough hours in the week? Can you respond fast enough to increases in computing demand? Automating the data center will allow your IT staff to work efficiently, creating time for new projects, and delivering fast service to your business customers.

Provisioning

Traditionally, a lot of time is spent on repetitive tasks. Repetition leads to boredom, boredom leads to loss of focus, and loss of focus results in tasks taking longer than necessary. By automating the repetitive tasks, you ensure that each system is identical. This is the key to managing a large number of servers. The following tasks are all excellent candidates for automation:

Hardware:
Automatically upgrade firmware.
Install OS.
Register new server with server management system(s).
Storage:
Allocate SAN disk space.
Manage WWN & LUNs.
Assign disk space to LVM.
Security:
Update IDS/IPS databases with new asset information.
Applications:
Pre-populate configurations.
Add new resource to load balancers.

Operations

The same provisioning systems, that allow for rapid deployment of new servers, also lend a hand to maintaining existing systems. Take a look at the following list and determine how much time is spent on these tasks today:

Configuration Changes:
Consistently apply new settings.
Detect system differences.
OS Patching:
Automatically update OS.
Manage Software:
Install new software.
License accounting.
Server Retirement:
Reclaim SAN storage.
Reclaim licenses.
Archive server configuration.
